Explore the Wave-like Sandstone Formations of Upper Antelope Canyon

Antelope canyon is a majestic slot canyon where wave-like formations flow in vibrant colors of oranges and purples, and sand particles suspend in the light beams that penetrate the narrow passageway. This canyon is located near Page Arizona on land owned by Najavo Nation. It has been formed over time by centuries of wind and water flowing through the crevice, and is only accessible by booking a tour.

To Get There

  • This tour is most accessible from the city of Page, Arizona

  • You can book through a tour on Get Your Guide owned and operated by the people of Navajo Nation

  • Tour we booked: Antelope Slot Canyon Tours Upper Antelope Canyon Tour / Air-conditioned shuttle from Page / 90 min tour

  • Price: We paid around $115 per person (2022), expensive but so worth it!

When to go

The famous light beams are visible for visitors to enjoy are between May and September.

The Upper Antelope Tour

See the crevice in the rocks in the image above? This is where you enter the canyon. It doesn’t look like much from the outside, but once you enter it becomes a beautiful maze of marbled Navajo sandstone. The rocks are shaped and smoothed over time by water and wind. The light refractions that enter from above create so many colors from the light and shadow. It’s stunning!

Supposedly, the best time to enter the canyon is between 11am and 1:30pm in order to see the light rays. We booked the 10:20am tour which worked out because after the shuttle ride we were in the canyon around 11am. We got to see the light beams!

Although there are a decent amount of people in the canyon, it was easy to get great images because of the way they pace the groups. Also, since the canyon walls were really high you could point the camera just above people’s heads and get the swirling rock walls. The guide was also incredibly helpful in showing us where to stand to get the best shots. This canyon is so photogenic.

The guides point out interesting shapes along the way, can you see “Julius Caesar” in the image on the right below?

Below shows where we exited the canyon. You would never know what’s hidden inside!
