The short hike
When we went up to Whiteface Mountain, we decided to do the short route since we were short on time. If you're looking for a memorable day in the Adirondacks without a full-day commitment, the 0.2-mile hike to Whiteface Mountain's summit via the Whiteface Veterans' Memorial Highway is the perfect choice. This short route is great for families, those with limited time, or anyone who prefers a less strenuous hike.
The journey begins at the base of the Whiteface Veterans' Memorial Highway, where you'll find ample parking and a well-maintained entrance. The highway itself is an engineering marvel, offering a scenic drive for those who prefer not to hike. But if you're up for some exercise and an unforgettable experience, follow the marked trail that starts near the toll booth. Walk up through a tunnel and up cement stairs with handrails.
The trail is well-marked and gently sloping, making it accessible for hikers of all levels. As you ascend, you'll find informational signs detailing the history of the area and its unique geology. This short hike offers not only stunning natural beauty but also a chance to learn about the region's rich history and geological features.
As you walk up the mossy stones along ridge there are amazing views of lakes from every angle. It was a little drizzly on the day we went so there were both dark and light fluffy clouds littered across the sky as we ascended the path to the top. Even though this hike is very short, its high elevation so be prepared to breathe a little harder along the way.
Tip: Wear shoes with good traction, it can get slippery on this well trafficked trail
As you reach the summit, you'll find yourself surrounded by a unique landscape. The rocky terrain is home to a variety of alpine plants that have adapted to the harsh conditions of Whiteface Mountain. Take a moment to appreciate the resilience of these plants and the rugged beauty of the exposed rocks.
The summit rewards your efforts with a 360-degree panoramic view that stretches as far as the eye can see. Lake Placid, Lake Champlain, and the surrounding Adirondack High Peaks are all visible from this vantage point. Truly breathtaking!
Hiking the short route to Whiteface Mountain is a fantastic way to experience the majesty of the Adirondacks without the commitment of a long hike. Whether you're a beginner hiker, traveling with family, or just looking for a quick adventure, this trail will leave you with memories of awe-inspiring landscapes.
