  • If you go on your own, it’s around 50000 IDR or $3.50 USD for adults, and about half that for children (2019)

  • Dress with respect to the culture, you can rent a “kamen wrap” (like a sarong) onsite

  • We did this activity as part of a larger day trip with Hire Bali Driver, which was nice because we had a driver and guide for several sites around Ubud

The temple's name, Tirta Empul, means "spring of life" in Balinese, and its sacred waters are said to have healing properties. The temple is situated on the grounds of a natural spring that has been flowing for centuries, and the Balinese people believe that the water is a gift from the gods. The temple was built around the spring in 926 AD, and it has been a place of worship and pilgrimage ever since.

Jaba Tengah purification pools

One of the most striking features of Tirta Empul is its stunning architecture. The temple complex is comprised of several pools, shrines, and pavilions that are surrounded by lush tropical gardens. The central pool, known as the "wishing well", is the heart of the temple and is considered the holiest of all the pools. Visitors are invited to immerse themselves in the cool, clear waters and make offerings to the Hindu gods. You bow under the gushing water of the first spout, and on through the eleventh as part of a ritual, emerging yourself in cold water each time. We changed into bright green water friendly sarong's and entered the waters to say our prayers for the new year.

The purification rituals performed at Tirta Empul are a major part of Balinese Hinduism, and they are an important aspect of daily life for the Balinese people. There are a total of 30 elaborately sculpted water spouts that line the edge from west to east. The sculptures are ornate and made from stone.

When you visit Tirta Empul, be prepared to spend some time exploring the temple grounds. There are several pools, each with its own unique character, and each one is surrounded by lush gardens and fragrant flowers. The temple is a peaceful oasis, and visitors can spend hours wandering the grounds, admiring the intricate carvings and sculptures, and soaking up the serene atmosphere.

Tirta Empul is an essential stop on any Bali itinerary. Whether you're interested in Hinduism, ancient cultures, or simply want to escape the hustle and bustle of modern life, this temple is a must-visit. The sacred waters of Tirta Empul have been flowing for centuries, and they continue to be a source of inspiration and rejuvenation for all who come to pay their respects.
