The Hike: Switzer Falls

The Switzer Falls trail is a 4.5-mile loop that winds through the shady, picturesque landscape of the San Gabriel Mountains. The trailhead is well-marked, and you'll immediately find yourself surrounded by the soothing sounds of chirping birds and rustling leaves.

The first part of the trail takes you along the scenic Arroyo Seco with small river bed running through, and a lot of tall trees and shade.

As you start to ascend, the mountains come into view. There are some pretty big drop offs on the ledge, so watch your dogs carefully if you’ve brought them.

As you get closer to the falls, there’s a great tree swing that goes over the small stream.

The highlight of the hike is, of course, Switzer Falls itself. Around the 1.5-mile mark, you'll reach the waterfall cascading down a rocky canyon. You can climb higher to see more of the waterfall since it rolls down the side of the mountain and can’t see all of the 50ft waterfall from the bottom. Since there wasn’t a clear route we didn’t attempt this.

Take a moment to soak it all in, snap some photos, and maybe even dip your toes into the refreshing pool at the base of the falls (it’s cold!).

What to Bring:

  1. Comfortable Hiking Gear: Sturdy hiking boots are a must, as the terrain can be uneven. Dress in layers, as temperatures can vary throughout the day.

  2. Hydration: Bring plenty of water to stay hydrated, especially during warmer months.

  3. Snacks: Pack some trail mix, granola bars, or fresh fruit to keep your energy levels up.

  4. Sun Protection: Don't forget sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to shield yourself from the California sun.

Tips for a Great Experience:

  1. Go Early: To beat the crowds and enjoy the tranquility of the trail, consider starting your hike early in the morning.

  2. Trail Etiquette: Be mindful of other hikers and share the trail. Leave no trace – follow the principles of responsible hiking and respect the environment.

  3. Check Trail Conditions: Before heading out, check the current trail conditions and weather forecast. Some sections may be closed due to maintenance or adverse weather.

Switzer Falls is a great hike for those seeking a day of outdoor adventure away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Whether you're a seasoned hiker or a beginner, the trail's moderate difficulty makes it accessible to all. Know of any other great trails in Angeles National Forest?
